02-02-2008 Emergenza Rotterdam

Date: 02-02-2008, venue: Exit, Rotterdam (Netherlands)

Last night of Emergenza Rotterdam and six bands were pleased to perform for us
  tonight.

First band of the evening is Incomplete. A young punk rock band. Musically they immediately reminded me of Parasite City. The band is quite enthusiastic on stage and to make watching them a little bit more fun they decided to cover Britney Spears – Oops I Did It Again. Of course, this idea is not that original, but the band performs with blonde wigs and shirts a la Britney. They   entertained me, so I voted for them.

Next is Twiggy. This punk band looked quite professional and well organized on stage. Bands like NOFX and Bad Religion clearly are influences. For some reason I had the feeling I saw this band before, but maybe it is just that they are very alike with another band. The band shows that they know how to be on stage. I liked it, I voted!

Third band of the evening is Rastafarius. They made lovely dreamy rock music. Although the performance of tonight might not be the best, there is something incredibly attractive to this band. One of the songs had quite an abrupt end, which sounded quite weird. But overall there is something in me that tells that this band will grow bigger and better in future. The charisma of the band members makes it all, but somehow there is still some insecurity visible. Once again,   that will be gone in a few more shows perhaps. Maybe this band would do better on a bigger stage? I hoped to see them in the P60 but unfortunately they did not make it.

The Paved brought us some progressive rock. Their music is really relaxed, and maybe I should not have listened to their music at the third evening in row of Emergenza, because it made me lazy and sleepy. That has nothing to do with the quality, just the fact that their music is more suitable for a quiet night at home. On stage they were not that active as well. They are nice to listen to, but a little too calm for me.

Sisters of Pleasure brought back my energy. Their rock tunes are happier, catchier and invite me more to actually listen to their music with my fullest attention. You hear many different influences in their music, but the songs ended all up as good pop rock songs. Especially the last song on their set did the trick. With that song they convinced me that I had to vote for this band.

The last band of this evening is Open. They make alternative rock. Typical music you have to listen to with attention, not really music which you would play somewhere in the background when working. I liked what they did, but they did not really stand out between the rest. They are just one of the many, many alternative rock bands. They did bring a lot of fans and they did make it to the semifinals, but for me there was not really a click. I just missed the thrill.
