Chalice – Ashes of Hope

[schema type=”review” name=”Chalice – Ashes of Hope” author=”Sabine van Gameren” pubdate=”2018-04-21″ ]Although the Belgian formation Chalice was born in 1998, anno 2018 we are looking at a rather different formation than what it started with. Different people, different genres. What we have in hands now is a release with melodics and aggression going hand in hand. “Ashes of Hope” it is called and it is available now.

It is good to hear that despite the band going back and forth in many ways that there is still some unity in what they present. “Ashes of Hope” is a release that seems to be made with precision. Well thought songs and good flowing melodies that fear no collaboration with the raw vocals of their front man.
In a song like “Musings On A Bank” you get that catchy melodic feel that drags you into the sound where in other tracks they go for more vehemence. They never really cease to make the connection between the two and that makes the whole pleasant to listen to. The attention to details is elevating the album to a higher level.

“Ashes of Hope” exceeds our expectations. Loads of lineup change and going back and forth in the genre’s is often an indicator of something that does not show much unity, but Chalice is that exception on the rule.
