02-03-2010 Mono

Supports: Tomydeepestego; Venue: Circolo Degli Artisti, Rome (Italy)
By: Lara Cappelli

The first to play was Tomydeepestego, a band from Rome formed in 2006. With three studio albums under their belt, they present a genre which stays in line with the one of the headliner of the night, post-rock, with some heavier sounds.

When they entered the stage the venue was still half-empty but as soon as the music began people started coming in. The guys on stage seemed a bit shy but still very concentrated on the music and it seemed their performance was well received by the audience that acclaimed them and seemed actually pretty knocked back by their music. With their very short performance these four guys easily got the public attention and probably its curiosity too. Tomydeepestego is surely a band that deserves to be caught live a second time, hopefully with a longer set.

When the venue was getting full it was time for Mono. No microphone was put on stage, to suggest that the show wasn’t going to be a talkative one. Mono actually never talked to the audience or even looked at it, on stage they simply become one with the music they play and set a very intense atmosphere. The band last release was “Hymn To The Immortal Wind” and they mostly played songs of that album, played them wonderfully I’d say. Mono music is characterized by a very melancholic and dramatic sound and a frequent use of crescendos in the melodies. The audience was completely caught by it and stayed quite for the whole show. It was incredible to see how concentrated and engrossed the band was, every song was played to perfection, where nothing was left to the case. It didn’t matter if Mono didn’t interact with the audience, as their music did it for them. No matter how their cds can catch you, their lives have a fighting chance to catch you twice as much.
