Support: Mad Marge & The Stone Cutters; Nachtleben, Frankfurt (Germany)
By: Nina Mende
This week seems to be a Psychobilly/Rockabilly week. Here I was on this Monday
evening, back in the Nachtleben in Frankfurt to see Mad Marge and the Stonecutters
from California and The Peacocks from Switzerland. The club was still empty
as I arrived, only the staff and the bands were there, although the doors were
already opened. This night wouldn’t be very crowded, more a relaxed show
with two great bands. Shortly before the first band of the night started, several
people finally found their way downstairs and were now gathering on the sides
and in the back of the club, everybody seemed too shy to stand right in front
of the stage.
Mad Marge and the Stonecutters now entered the stage. I knew I’ve seen the double bass player before, and now I remembered where: I saw him with Rezurex. The world is really tiny sometimes. The female vocalist was having a cold, her voice was still great and so was the performance. It was a pity that not that many people were there nor did anybody really know any song of the band. But hey, it was a Monday night and for that it was really good. They played for about 45 minutes, and since they seldomly write set lists they were deciding which song to play next, spontaneously. I am always fascinated how double bass players treat their instrument, and so was I this time. M2 (double bass) was throwing it around, and even lifting it up to his shoulders as if the bass had no weight. Keep in mind that a double bass is big!!! Amazing. And how he played on it. With such a passion. Wow! Double basses and their players always amaze me big time. But the band had more to offer. Two great guitar players, one of them was wearing a Frantic Flintstone shirt (I will see them live soon) and the other one had gorgeous tattoos like everywhere, and many piercings. And some people say I have many with my lousy six tattoos and more than ten piercings…. They had a great time on stage and I had a great time listening and watching, so did the rest of the audience which was still far off the stage and it wasn’t going to change much during the evening. Mad Marge and the Stonecutters is a great band and worth seeing over and over again. I hope I’ll get the chance to do so. |
Main act of the night was The Peacocks, a trio from Switzerland, with double bass, of course. They have nine albums released so far and rock since 1990. Michi was rocking his bass like a maniac, whirling it around, twisting it, dancing with it and doing all kinds of stuff. He never stood still not even one second, neither did his double bass. Hasu was doing splits and jumping around with his guitar as well when he was not singing or talking to the audience. When he talked, he did so in German with a funny but somehow adorable accent. The audience was dancing along and enjoying the energetic and very powerful performance of these three Swiss guys. The sweat was just running but they kept on going without getting tired, so it seemed. The Peacocks rocked the stage for about an hour, and played an encore on the audience’s demand. A great show for a Monday night, even if we all kept in mind that most of us had to get up early the next morning and go to work. I’m looking forward to next time. |
