The Atlas Moth – A Glorified Piece of Blue Sky

Releasedate: 21-09-2009; Label: Candlelight Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

The Atlas Moth is an American band that makes a combination of Sludge and stoner metal. The band formed in 2007 and got picked up by Candlelight Records. “A Glorified Piece of Blue Sky” is their debut album.

The music of this band reminds in the first place to bands like Neurosis. It’s full of darkness and doom, but very limited in space. There are boundaries and The Atlas Moth does not bother to go and meet them. Leaves you with an album that is focused on it initial. Psychedelic effects feed the hunger to variation, but how long will it satisfy you is the second question. Vocals are quite sporadic and tend to be screamy, sniping and mainly for the atmosphere as the band is not telling you a story with words. The Atlas Moth seemed to be a band that plays with atmosphere and when it all comes to the point that the droning sound gets a bit too much for a listener that does not works his way in this genre at daily base it might be a tough one to finish.

The album is safe, the fact that they stayed true to their own genre characteristics is a pro, There is still a few meters till the border and it is a pity that these are still unused. Fans from outside the border will need binoculars to observe the sense of The Atlas Moth, which might be worth to do actually. Hopefully they can bring the distance to a minimum in the next release, as it might benefit the fan base.
