Death By Stereo – Death is My Only Friend

Releasedate: 05-10-2009; Label: I Scream Records / Warner
By: Nina Mende

Since their inception in 1998, DEATH BY STEREO has been balancing consciousness and chaos with their unique genre-bending amalgam of hardcore, metal and punk. Recently signed to vocalist Serj Tankian’s (System of a Down) label Serjical Strike Records, the Orange County based band will see their 5th studio album Death Is My Only Friend released July 7th of this year. Previously, the band released their last three studio records via Epitaph Records and their debut album on Indecision.

This is their sixth album now. Listzeining to the first minutes of this album I would call it hard rockabilly because of the melodic yet strong lyrics. But they also have quite some metal elements in it. There is lots of shouting, double kick and distortion on this album. Yet the balance is kept so it doesn’t turn into a complete metal album. “The Last Song” is definitely not the last song on the album but is more in the middle of it, but it is a very catchy song, as well as some others on this album. “Forever and a Day” has great piano playing on it and is very emotional. This album varies between all styles quite a lot but sticks to the main track quite strong. This album contains emotions, soft and slow songs, rocking medium songs and fast metal song. So “Death Is My Only Friend” is not only a great piece for one group of people but for these three that I mentioned above at least.
