Releasedate: 18-09-2009; Label: Universal
By: Nina Mende

Element of Crime is a German rock band that plays melancholic chanson-, pop- and rockmusic with guitar, bass, drums and voice/trumpet. The band was founded in 1985 by Sven Regener who later became known as the author of the books “Neue Vahr Süd” (2004), “Der Kleine Bruder” (2008) and “Herr Lehmann” (2001) (“Berlin Blues”) and as the screenplay writer of the film adaptation of “Herr Lehmann”. Regener sings and plays guitar, trumpet, accordion and piano. The band’s name was borrowed from the title of the movie “The Element of Crime” by Lars von Trier. While various members of the band contributed music to the songs, Regener wrote most of the lyrics – in English for the first few albums and then in German.

Their newest album “Immer Da Wo Du Bist Bin Ich Nicht” is also sung in German. The music reminds of the 80s music in Germany. The lyrics are serious, the music sounds sad and melancholic. Some guitar riffs remind of country music you know from the USA. This album takes you back in time, freeing you from every restrictions life has nowadays. Back to where you were free and had time to actually listen to your thoughts. The singer ‘s voice adds the final touch to the vintage sound of the music. If you understand German, definitely give a close listen to each song’s lyrics. If not, let your mind drift away to the music. “Deborah Müller” even has some Mexican music style in it. The bonus track is sung in English and sounds like “My Bonnie is Over The Ocean” only with different lyrics. A really gorgeous album, not sticking to only one style but adding them all together creating a perfect sound. If you don’t love it, your parents will. Guaranteed!
