The Finnish Poets of the Fall has toured quite many countries through the years but The Netherlands has never been on their list so far. This year it’s the band’s first opportunity to hit the Dutch stages and obviously the bookers did good gamble with it as the place was pretty much packed.
All those people came to see the Finns play. The new album called “Jealous Gods” is only out for a few weeks and yet it seems like the songs are as familiar as the oldest and most famous ones. The audience easily fills in for vocalist Marko whenever he gives them a chance. And that is exactly what he does every now and then. For Marko has a whole lot of charisma and enjoys to play around with the audience in any way. Does he make some smart jokes with the titles of the songs or does he simply keep his jokes a bit more hidden by playing first “Brighter Than The Sun” followed directly by “Locking Up The Sun”. Or does he reach out to the audience to touch their hands while giving each and every person the impression he is staring you straight in the eyes. Well, he does it all. But we must not forget he is not the only one on the stage. The rest of the band is quite modest and tend to stay a bit in the background sometimes when it comes to performance, but the guys know how to score with the dedicated listeners by playing some nice guitarsolo’s and shake off these riffs as if it comes completely effortless.
On the setlist are a bunch of ballads as the band has a great amount to choose from their repertoire and although each and all that was played hit the audience with some sympathy it is “Cradled In Love” which gives us all goose bumps. Brought quite perfect while here and there some small critical points came up during the songs played before. We knew on forehand that Marko had a bit lack of sleep and more but not a word on that was mentioned as these guys don’t do excuses but give the audience the all they have. Towards the end they built up to an energetic end and with their big hit “Carnival of Rust” the band leaves their fans with smiles on their faces. The Dutch had to wait quite a while for them Finns but they proved to be worth waiting for.
