31-05,01-06-2013 Findustry: School’s Out

Venue: On The Rocks, Helsinki (Finland)
By: Sabine van Gameren

While summer has arrived in Finland Findustry is coming with its School’s Out edition. No Alice Cooper involved. Promise! Schools are actually out and the party is going on everywhere.

Diablerie is opening the stage at On The Rocks and it comes LOUD! In such a way that it becomes a bit hard to hear what exactly is going on. At the end of the set the whole got tempered a bit which makes it all a whole lot more pleasant to listen to. The band has been around for some years already, the formation took place in 1998. The band had a little hiatus but since 2006 the band is active again. Here they were showing their strength mainly in the guitars combined with the vocals. The industrial element was definitely there but did not seem to be what shapes the face of Diablerie. Bonus comes from the guys bringing plenty of energy into their performance which makes their show come alive even while there only a few early birds around and the rest got stuck at a terrace still.

The Physicists are there to bring an ode to the schools out theme. While their music sounds more evil, viciously sharp like with that vehemence Black Metal edge to spice it up (yes really), there comes an experiment that turned out to be successful. Some stage decoration, a blackboard that has not survived this show. While bringing it to total destruction it has been made clear that The Physicists is also ready for some summer vacation and that there is now some time for a good party. Obviously the audience agrees to that and while the dancing and rocking is taking over the venue, people may have witnessed the most extraordinary show of The Physicists so far.

Only three months ago, Fear of Domination knocked us out with a splendid show at Metalorgy festival and now back in Helsinki it is the, by now, pretty filled venue of On The Rocks. While the band released a brand new single called “Paperdoll” and the band mentions to be back at the studio soon to record a new full length album. Right now we are presented with the good classics found on their earlier releases and since the fans that have come know these very well an instant party rises when the guys perform. What comes to notice that while the band is perfectly able to set a show for a larger crowd, a more intimate setting suits them nicely as well. When fans are close to their band and the music brings everyone in good spirits, hardly anything can go wrong.

Concluding this first night of Findustry was Proteus featuring Erilaz and friends. A spectacle that came with some hiccups, but a whole load of energy can make frustrations on those minor details easily fade. General Proteus rocks it with his guitar, and while you hear tracks passing by that you recognize of the albums of bands like Turmion Kätilöt and Fear of Domination of which the last one was heard twice in this set, the second time including FoD vocalist Saku. If it’s nice, you play it twice is the wisdom learnt out of this. When the last songs are played the night is given back to the djs who finish the party with some lovely dancing tunes.

Day 2:

-sihil was the first act of this evening and it appears to be a solo project. Straight from the start a whole lot of hyperactivity comes loose, that brings to mind that it resembles the lonely dancer a little. Yet, that lonely one is proving that you can make the music sound quite full, electro/EBM style like you would see it in Germany at any of the industrial festivals. It is a little hard to find the identity of –sihil in here. What makes this so different than the rest? It’s not the music, it’s not the lyrics that have a unique factor in it and the performance, although very energetic, does not give us something that makes us remember it. Something to work on, it would be a shame to if it would be forgotten so fast.

The Alternative Metal band Khroma has less problems with showing who they are. Intensity is their secret key to success and they give a challenging exhibition of what they are up to. And what the band does very well is playing with the unexpected. At one point is the band´s vocalist who uses his deepest intensity to overwhelm you, but a bit later you are observing some wicked guitars taking the lead. With a descent dose of diversity they captivate their audience during their complete set. Some things they do you might find familiar by various others in this genre but the band has a clear vision of what they want to set out for you. That being said, the band will have a performance scheduled at the upcoming Tuska festival, which we recommend to all our readers. Surely, Tempelores will be found there.

A show of Iiwanajulma is never the same, and as a follow up of Khroma they bring this atmosphere to even higher levels. Sometimes it´s wild and free, sometimes it is intense. Sometime it is a preacher of life, sometimes it speaks to your conscience. Whatever it is, it is always directed at you. It´s in Finnish, yet the music is universal and here at On The Rocks the band shows a daring side of them, a cat and mouse play with their audience. Who responds to who, where is the energy coming from or is it just circling back and forth. Iiwanajulma catches the atmosphere perfectly and sets down some great highlights here this evening. Where Khroma ends, Iiwanajulma continues and tops it off.

Verjnuarmu is a band that makes the so called Savo Metal. Savo reflects to a Finnish dialect which they use. The music they make has sometimes a little threatening undertone in it for those who are not understanding the Savo dialect, and perhaps that creates that effect that whatever they perform has a little stress on it. Just a bit more vehemence into it than as if it would be simply in English. Some warmth comes into the performance with the addition of some keys, a nice touch that enriches the sound. The oddities here and there make this band very playful to watch and makes that their set never gets boring. No wonder that the audience demands a little more at the end. The request got granted but after that, it was up for the djs to finalize this Findustrial prom and announce the summer as opened.
