Slough Feg – Ape Uprinsing!

Releasedate: 2009; Label: Cruz Del Sur
By: Elvira Visser

Slough Feg is an American band that has his origins around the year 1990. When holding their new album “Ape Uprising!” in my hands I expected something different than what you will get. The drawing of monkeys on the cover of their new album made me think I was going to listen to some hardcore band. Why this association? I do not know, but when the first tones had reached my ears I knew this was going to be a nice CD.

The CD has a bit of an older – we have been out there, metal sound. Which results in a good quality, no wonder, if they are around for almost 20 years. The tracks have nice guitar solo’s and maybe even some punk and blues influences, but then played in their own style. Their sound has nice power but not too much, so it is easy to listen too. The guitars seem pretty important as they are way more present than Michael Scalzi’s vocals. There are many layers of guitar work, even when Michael is singing you can hear a guitar solo in the back, but somehow it is not an overkill, it might have been close.

“Shake Down at the Six” is one those tracks that has a catchy chorus, guitar solos and some weird interludes and transitions to other parts of the track, some when you would not expect it. I guess that is what makes this album what it is, and most important you do not get bored of the high amount of guitar solos. The tracks do not turn into something boring or like one flow of guitars. It says interesting due to these changes.
