Patricia Kaas is the most known and successful French-speaking singer since mid 80’s. “Kaas chante Piaf“ (“Kaas sings Piaf”) is Patricia Kaas’ project which nothing but tribute to great voice of 20th century French singer Édith Piaf arranged by Abel Korzeniowski. The live show was recorded as album and released this fall.
So there are 16 brilliant tracks (well known and not as well). I think that will be a huge mistake to compare two French women because Piaf is the one and only. But there are some points that make the old songs sound a little bit different but not less powerful. The first of all, it’s Kaas’ voice. Deep voice of heavy smoker and chanson manner of performing made the bright songs unbelievable darker. The second thing which made the sounds so pathetic and turns everything in the oppressive atmosphere is powerful symphonic arrangement. The best prove of wonderful equipments’ work is two only instrumental tracks “The 9th hour” and “Song for the bird” (the last one could be tribute to madam Piaf which scene name was “sparrow” literally).
The dismal album “Kaas Chante Piaf” would be suitable for those who needs heavy depression. I recommend return to bright masterpieces singing by “the little sparrow” Édith Piaf.
