26-09-2012 Nordman

Supports: Majlo; Venue: Göta Källare, Stockholm (Sweden)
By: Martine Goffard

Göta Källare is a small underground club, situated in the entrance of a Stockholm’s subway station. Yesterday, the venue received the Swedish folk band Nordman. They are not very well known out of Sweden but here they are famous veterans of the national rock scene. Founded in 1993, split up then reunited in 2004, the band has released six albums and three best of over the years. Useless to say that many fans of all generations and styles filled the venue.

The opening group this evening is the folk band Majlo. The trio plays fresh Swedish songs, sometime melancholic, about everyday life. The main singer, Maja Långbacka, has a very sweet, enchanting voice and the airs have some bohemian influences, particularly in the violin played by the merry Samuel Andersson who will manage to warm up a very timid audience. Some songs have repetitive chorus, which gives a charming effect of dizziness. After this very pleasant intro, it’s time for the headliners.
Jumping on the stage, the guys start with the classic Det Sista Du Ser. As soon as they begin to sing, you can see smiles and fascination on the heteroclite audience. The spell has fallen upon us. Lyrics come to our lips and we wiggle with pleasure. The next song is Under Norrskenet. It has some oriental influence, even if it’s played on the very traditional nyckelharpa by Mats Wester. Though this last one is very charismatic, it’s still the singer, Håkan Hemlin, who steals the stage with his captivating rocker aura. The frontmen interact and joke constantly with the audience. Between Ännu Glöder Solen, Vill Ha Mer or the slow but melancholic I Midsommartid, there is no shortage of folk hits! Allthough Förlist is their first single; it’s the joyful Be Mig which is definitely considered as the favorite song. The crowd just gets mad at it. It’s a real uproar of screams. I have to say that I am used to see gigs in Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Germany and that it’s my first time in Sweden. I have never heard such fervor, such a noise from a so small audience (and the venue is “no entry under 18”). These people are Vikings showing their deep enthusiasm and it’s a real blast. After a very short break, the band comes back for the three last songs: Ödet Var Min Väg, I Lågornas Sken and the excellent Vandraren (the one that Ensiferum made a cover of it). This closes a show of 1h30, short but still a must-see.
