Kerli is an Estonian singer who is best known for her appearance in the 2002 Fizz Superstar competition (first Baltic version of American Idol). She sang Nelly Furtado’s song “I’m like a bird” and won the competition with 95 points and got a record deal. In 2004, she also took part in Eurolaul competition. In the event, she performed the song “Beautiful Inside” and accumulated 3,638 points overall in the judging and televoting processes. Her total points would only allow her to finish in 2nd place, however, with Neiokõsõ winning the event. Kerli also competed in the 2003 Swedish Melodifestivalen with the song “Let’s Go”, finishing 7th in the second semi-final. In her home country the debut album “Love Is Dead” was already released last year. But now it is finally out in the rest of Europe and US as well. She is currently working on her second album but let me tell you about this one first.
The album reminds of the movie Corpse Bride. The cover shows Kerli as a sad doll. On the inside you can find black and white pictures of Kerli, her family and mother as well as a letter in Estonian. You can unfold the booklet to a poster of the doll. On the back of the CD case you find the back of the doll, she’s holding a mirror so you can still see her face. The colors are black and blue, and you can find blue roses and other blue flowers. The music itself can be described as gloomy doll rock because you can hear a lot of musical clock sounds. Kerli has a gorgeous voice and sings with a lot of emotions in her songs. All songs are great to sing along and get stuck in your head very easily. “Walking On Air” is probably the most popular one on the album.
“Bulletproof” is a quite tragic song, very sad and generous if you listen to the lyrics. Speaking of lyrics: these you cannot find in the booklet, but Kerli is singing clear enough to understand the words without having to read along. “Creepshow” sounds like a cheer and kids song. “Butterfly Cry” is another very slow and thoughtful song.
The album doesn’t get boring because all songs differ from one another. The album contains dance floor songs, radio songs and slow songs. A great mix of feelings combined with a great voice and catchy melodies.
