Supermannen is a formation from The Netherlands playing guitar driven pop/rock music. Lyrics are in Dutch. They released their debut album “Er Is Maar Een Supermannen: The Best Of” on 27 April 2009.
The band formed in 2001 and collected the recordings of songs at several places for this album. A couple of songs are recorded live. I expected a bit of the typical just-for-fun attitude when I had a first view on the album. I was positively surprised to meet some swinging guitar riffs and decent vocals. Don’t count out the fun element, it’s there, but it is not such a band that you will only like when you are drunk. The music has a good dose of energy with it, though it never get’s overdone. The fact that the band has their lyrics in Dutch might sound as a limiting factor for their fame, but as the instrumental background is ok it should not be weird to see them peeking over the border as well.
The band covered a hit song of the Dutch band Doe Maar which will surely will be appreciated in live sets as well.
The chosen name for the band might sound a bit arrogant (Supermen in English) and whether a “the best of” album as debut is a good idea, is a point of debate as well but it has some balls. Supermannen will not be a big world chart topper but for the Dutch it can be seen as their own private musical sweets.
