30-06-2012 Battleship of Pain

Venue: Waïski, Helsinki (Finland)
By: Sabine van Gameren

While everywhere in town the Tuska afterparties are going, you sometimes need to keep your eyes open to find something special. Instead of going to these club you can also have a party on a boat, while some bands are rocking. Battleship of pain was this event.

As a winner of the competition on the website Hitlantis it was the band Four Punch Letdown that was starting this evening. It is quite a young band and they surely need some time to grow but the guys seem to have their ideas of what they want to sound like. A bit of Metallica can be heard in here and while some enthusiastic fan shouts out they are the Metallica of Kallio (some place in Helsinki) the band starts a cover of a complete different band, 3 Doors Down. Good, some technique is lacking still but there are worse ways to start an evening. Let’s see what the guys will bring in a year or two.

Black Light Discipline was up next and the band needed only half a minute to get everyone dancing and rocking out. Simply said, the band had their fans with them and on a cosy boat like this the party starts off easily. Earlier this year the band released their album “Against Each Other” which has some true catchy tunes. Obviously those are played here tonight and it shows that this album works out live as much as you expect it while hearing it from cd. While some are jumping on speakers, the audience gets closer and closer which brings up the heat. When their set ends there everyone is all ready for more, but the heat makes that it is now time for them to end it all.

Fear of Domination was still up on the bill so the evening did not end early at all. The band introduces a new member this evening and with a long set list ahead the night was not supposed to end anytime early. You know the band keeps playing till the ship goes down and it must be said that they came close to destroying it all. Besides the songs played from their albums a couple of covers are played as well, a true party. The more songs come by the more the audience got hyped up. It’s interesting to see how everyone moves around at this ship, while the ceiling is quite low and the sound is maybe not the best as it would be in a venue, but that the atmosphere is very intimate here. A show that you would not want to have missed!
