03-03-2012 Insomnium

Supports: Noumena; Venue: Virgin Oil, Helsinki (Finland)
By: Lara Cappelli

With a growing fan base, Finland’s Insomnium has established themselves in the death metal scene release after release, especially after their latest “One For Sorrow”. Tonight they played a show in Virgin Oil, right in the centre of Helsinki.

The first band to enter the stage was Noumena. Coming from the same country as Insomnium, their homeland is not the only thing the two have in common. As a matter of fact, the kind of melodic death metal they bring hitches up quite well with the one of the headliners of the night. There are some differences to be found though: the most evident one stands in the vocals, prevailed by Antti Haapanen growls, but often joined by Suvi Uura ones. Right her presence on stage makes the lowest point of their performance come evident; besides the fact she’s often shy and clumsy in her role, all the six are barely moving at all, which makes it pretty hard to get into the mood at first. The band did manage to get the audience happy with their performance though, raising more and more approvals as the songs went by. All in all their music, suggestive and atmospheric at times, made it to the audience, maybe much better than their presence itself, but their performance was one you definitely can’t complain of.

Virgin Oil was crammed with people making their voice well heard as they waited for Insomnium. “Inertia”, the opening track of their latest album, is chosen as the opening of tonight’s set too, getting the audience well excited through its ambient bits that soon drift into “Through The Shadows” that gets the first slight moshpits started. From there on everything just seemed to pass so compact and strong before you: enduring and energic stage presence combined with evident involving with the music turned out an incredible combination. Every single member of the audience within my eyeline seemed more than satisfied, almost asborbed by what was going on on stage, and I guess you could just hear the rest. As a result of that, the band repeatedly showed their gratitude for the overwhelming feedback they received throughout the whole show.
As the final notes of “One For Sorrow” rang out, you might want to look back not only on what you have just seen but on the entire story of Insomnium. Ever progressing since their formation, their albums demonstrate the abilities of a band that has definitely a lot to convey. Their gigs make it all come alive.
