04-11-2011 Martyr

Supports: The Sleeper, Rebelchild; Venue: Azotod, de Meern (Utrecht)
By: Sabine van Gameren

The band Martyr had their record release party in Azotod, de Meern (Netherlands). They also brought some supports.

First on stage was the formation The Sleeper. The band makes Stoner Rock and gains attention of the audience easily by the way they present themselves on the stage. The presence of the charismatic Vincent helps them to bring in a little aggression in the sound, making it more vehemence and exciting. Groovy sounds to start the evening with and The Sleeper is a band you may not have expected here at first but seem to work quite well. A great way to start the evening with.

Rebelchild is way more static on the stage but bring their entertainment with Hard Rock on a typical classic way. This type of music is not the most popular in The Netherlands and that results in a quite tame response of the audience, but overall the band shows they know how to play. Good guitarriffs wthat remain from bing cheesy and a bunch of good songs fill their set. Typical a band that would do great in Finland or Sweden but is missing support right here.

Martyr is the band where it is all about tonight. They formed in the 80’s and have set themselves a legacy after that. For some years they were split up but eventually they got back together and started releasing material again. Anno 2011 the band comes with the album called “Circle of 8”.

At this release party you see that the band has a dedicated fan base. Up front it is a young generation rocking hard while in the back some older rockers are observing the spectacle. That the band is close with their fans may become clear soon enough as the band asks their fans to join on stage when the set is already going strong for quite some time. ‘The stage is yours people’ vocalist Rop van Haren tells them and this doesn’t have to be repeated.
Besides the material of their new album the band also takes some older songs which pleases the audience as well. Martyr showed at this evening why they have found themselves a strong fan base. It is an entertaining live band that sets a good show and impresses on the musical side as well.
