Nils Frahm is a German composer, born in 1982. After being taught to play the piano by Nahum Brodski, he started being deeply influenced by the contemporary classical music scene. His third studio album is now released under Erased Tapes.
It’s late at night in Berlin, where a young composer decides to put a damper to his piano to keep it from disturbing the neighbours. In doing that, he finds out how beautifully it all sounds, and decides to register his album using this technique. Now that you know this detail, you might find yourself listening to the album and being totally blown away by the capability of it in taking you back to that night when the album was recorded. The microphones are placed deep inside the piano, introducing you to a whole new world made by micro sounds. The creaking of the wooden floorboard, the musician breathing himself, all these sounds are clearly present and contribute in creating the actual magic of the album. It’s useless to pick one song out of “Felt”, as it all flow in a crystal clear way. It’s a magic flow that feels like taking place right next to you, where Nils is sitting and playing his songs.
Nils Frahm has doubtlessly developed an incredible expressivity in the years, which is maybe the fruit of the contact and past collaboration with other artists from Erased Tapes Label. What is sure though, is that when an album gets to speak for itself, to draw thousands of images, when it manages to embody the mirror of something inner, still delivering this intimacy with stunning sincerity, then that album can be definitely considered “magnificent”.
