03-10-2008 Kill Hannah

Supports: My Passion; Venue: Melkweg, Amsterdam (Netherlands)
By: Sabine van Gameren

When I arrived at the Melkweg venue in Amsterdam, already quite some young fans had gathered in front of the door. The weather was nice, so it must be a cozy happening for the fans to meet up early.

I was lucky that I did not had to wait in front of the door with all these girls since I was doing an interview with My Passion which will published later this week. My Passion was the support band tonight. They are along with Kill Hannah on a European tour.
My Passion is a band from UK, playing electronic, punk/emo like music. With their catchy tunes it took them only a minute to impress the mainly teenage, female audience. Their music is pretty danceable and easy to pick up. Although I can imagine that most of the girls are too young to recognize it, I found influences of bands like The Cure back in their music. As a stage act I found this band amazingly entertaining. They take over the stage but have a great connection with the fans, which often took this opportunity to touch the guys.
When the band announces they will be at the merchandise stand afterwards to sign stuff and have a chat with the fans, a lot of them took this opportunity right ahead.

Headlining was the USA band Kill Hannah. They have a typical emo style of music, their way of composing songs is comparable to The Rasmus. Kill Hannah has been in Amsterdam before and so come that there starts an enormous screaming when the guys enter the stage. From what I had heard of them as recorded music, I felt highly disappointed with the act of tonight. This mostly due to their vocalist Mat Devine, which did not fulfill my expectations. He sounded a bit like having a cold. Luckily for this band they had their fans to scream along, so not too many people will have noticed it. As Mat said: “You guys are louder than the music”. He also told that their Dutch fans are one of the most enthusiastic ones. As a show they did a nice job. With laser lights on their guitars they created a nice effect in the venue. Loads of respect for these musicians who still dare to come closer to the edge of the stage where they often got grabbed by their fans and hardly got released from them again.
Seeing this, I assume that Kill Hannah has a right of existence with their very dedicated fans, but for me they were a bit disappointing musically.
