04-05-2011 Through The Noise

Venue: Colossaal, Aschaffenburg (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

After almost two weeks absence from the concert venues – and severe withdrawals- I was finally back on track. What show would fit better for this “comeback” than Through The Noise tour with amazing bands like Comeback Kid, The Ghost Inside, Kvelertak, Gravemaker and Social Suicide?!

The show was beginning quite early. At 8pm sharp the first band went on stage. The venue was not too crowded yet, but it was going to be! And despite the fact that it was a Wednesday night, people were ready to rock their minds out.

First band of the night was a Norwegian band: Social Suicide. A band founded five years ago and having just released their debut album. A band that has come a long way and has an even longer way ahead. After seeing their show tonight, we all could be sure that Social Suicide will go far. They rocked the house big time. The audience loved them and it was only the first band of the night. Social Suicide played for about half an hour. The audience demanded an encore but the schedule was tight.

The next band was Gravemaker. Gravemaker may be a new band, but the members have grown up in the hardcore scene. Their 2008 release “Bury Me At Sea” was produced by Roger Camero (The Warriors, No Motiv) and features guests including Andrew Neufeld of Comeback Kid and Rick Jimenez of This Is Hell and Soldiers. Gravemaker come on with a blast, The audience was gong insane, moshing and starting a circle pit. People began to crowd surf. Neither one, audience or band, stood still for a second. The singer kept going onto the barricades to be close to the audience and sing with them. Their show lasted half an hour and rocked the crowd big time.

Now it was time for Kvelertak. Kvelertak (translating to English as “stranglehold” or “chokehold”) is a six-piece metal band from Stavanger, Norway. All lyrics are written in Norwegian, the band’s native language, and concerning Norse mythology/Viking folklore. Known for their consistent, idiosyncratic sound, the band states that their main influences are rock and roll, black metal and punk. Whirling around on stage the audience was going even crazier. The singer reminded a little bit of the singer of Turbonegro. Even though Kvelertak sang in Norwegian, the people shouted along and moved along. More and more people began to crowd surf. Just like Gravemaker, Kvelertak did not like the barricades too much and animated the audience to get up on stage and stage dive into the crowd which people started doing.

After the Norwegian madness of Kvelertak it was time for the Californians of The Ghost Inside. The Ghost Inside (formerly A Dying Dream) is an American Melodic Hardcore band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2006. With The Ghost Inside there was yet another amazing band rocking on stage. Just like the previous bands the singer stepped up on the barricades to be close to the fans. The audience was going even crazier than before, unbelievable that that was still possible. People went up on stage to jump back into the audience for stage diving. They rocked, moshed and shouted along to the music. The band did not stand still for a second. The Ghost Inside put up an amazing and breathtaking performance. And they were not even the last band.

Because the last band was the Canadians of Comeback Kid. Comeback Kid (commonly abbreviated as CBK) is a Hardcore punk band from Winnipeg, Canada. Their name comes from a headline in a newspaper about hockey player, Mario Lemieux coming back to the NHL. The band was formed in 2002 by Andrew Neufeld and Jeremy Hiebert who were both members of the band Figure Four, which is currently on hiatus. They were joined by their friends Scott Wade and Kyle Profeta, but CBK was originally intended only to be a side project. Their initial popularity was mainly due to word of mouth within the hardcore scene. Their new album “Symptoms and Cures” was just released and now they tour with it along with all these other amazing bands that rocked the stage before Comeback Kid came on. Just like the previous bands, Comeback Kid rocked big time and never stood still. The audience seemed to have endless energy too: The moshing and rocking along continued, as well as the stage diving and crowd surfing. The singer of Comeback Kid also stepped down to the photo pit to be close to the fans. They sang along to the songs, rocking hard. Unbelievable that it was a Wednesday night. What a brilliant evening with amazing bands. Too bad it went by so quickly.
