Tonight Apocalyptica had their last show in Europe before heading over the the USA to tour there with their latest album “7th Symphony”. Apocalyptica is a heavy metal band from Helsinki, Finland, formed in 1993. The band is composed of classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso (all three of whom are graduates of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki) and drummer Mikko Sirén. Originally a Metallica tribute band, their music borrows elements from many genres including classical music, neo-classical metal, post-grunge, progressive metal, thrash metal, and symphonic metal. They have sold over four million albums to date.

The first band was A Life Divided. A Life Divided is a German electro-rock bands from Munich. With their latest album called “Passenger” A Life Divided opened up for Apocalyptica. The venue was packed and the people enjoyed the great and catchy gothic rock music of A Life Divided. Their set lasted for about 30 minutes, then it was time for the Finns to rock the stage.

From vocals and rock music with guitar and bass to no vocals and rock music with three cellos and drums. The audience was super excited as Apocalyptica rocked the stage. They played old and new songs, rocked around on stage and moved around as if their cellos were light as a feather. Amazing how Eicca could still play the right notes while head banging that heavily. He was also the one talking to the audience the most. Sometimes in German, sometimes in English he told the audience stories, made them laugh and got them to cheer out loud, clap along and rock out to the music. The audience went wild, sometimes sang the lyrics to the Metallica songs Apocalyptica played. For some songs Apocalyptica had a vocalist coming up on stage to sing the songs like “I Don’t Care” or “I’m Not Jesus”. The fans loved it. Apocalyptica played for 90 minutes plus an encore. The light was amazing and so was the sound. The Finns are always up for a joke which was making the gap between audience and band disappear and made it a much more familiar event. Apocalyptica is always great to see. If you happen to be in the USA while they are touring there, make sure to check them out.
