Christmas is close, so no wonder that the first Christmas albums are hitting the stores and streaming portals. Here is one that we found special: Tarja – yes, the ex-Nightwish singer – with “Dark Christmas”. In 2006, she already released a Finnish Christmas album which went by the name of “Henkäys ikuisuudesta“, followed by a winter album in 2007 which was called “My Winter Storm” and in 2017 another Christmas album with “From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas)”. So I suppose it was not too surprising after all.

Anyway, lets start in the beginning: Tarja herself, I believe, does not need an introduction. We all know and love – or hate – her since she was with Nightwish. But her name does ring a bell either way, amongst classic fans as well as metal fans. “Dark Christmas” is her ninth solo album which lasts for fifty-two minutes. All songs on this album are classics and you will be able to sing along to easily. Even “Last Christmas” has made it onto this album. But, please bear in mind, all with a dark gothic touch to it, which makes it quite interesting to listen to. Some songs include a choir, some are rather pure, but all set the jolly mood – of a dark winter siren, an Irish Banshee singing her warning tunes or a black widow. Sounds fun, right? Well, check it out.

All again in short: “Dark Christmas” comes with twelve well-known Christmas songs that she slightly changed up a bit to fit the scene. Now “Frosty The Snowman” or “White Christmas” sound more like a Nightmare before Christmas with the dark touch to it. Tarja’s soprano voice sounds like a winter siren trying to lure you into the dark. And you know what? Somehow it woks and she will get her grip around your mind. So there is the perfect Christmas album for all amongst you that love a dark Christmas but don’t want to give up on Christmas classics in this jolly season. “Dark Christmas” is out now, waiting for you.
