Ajattara – Murhat

Releasedate: 02-02-2011; Label: Osasto-A Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Black metal formation Ajattara has been formed in 1996. The Finns have a long list of releases making “Murhat” their seventh full length album.

Ajattara got a legendary state during the years, though the band had to face a lot sharp opinions about their latest releases. Set that up versus their impressive gig at Tuska Jatkoklubi show last summer where many Tuska visitors went for an after party and it might have set an expectation for this release. The concept of the album is typical Ajattara. Depressive atmospheres, tempo differences all over the album, not scared of some doom slowness. The audial sodomy of these guys is very convincing. The album title has all to do with murder and those who aren’t familiar with the Finnish language, will get the point anyway when listening to the vocals in combination with the driving guitars. Drums may be more adequate than you realize in the beginning. Especially in the second half of the album they tend to step forward. Altogether it forms a psychotic sort of sound scarcely leaving you a second to escape, abusing your brain to get into it. This fundamental point makes that this album captures you more than before, “Murhat” seems to be that album imbued well and therefore more effective than the previous, controversial, releases of the band.
