Intro
Never a band to rest on their exceedingly large heap of laurels, Motorpsycho has already returned with the follow-up album to 2020’s highly acclaimed “The All Is One“. Recorded partly in the same sessions as TAIO at Black Box Studio in France and partly at a local studio in Trondheim, the brand new album “Kingdom Of Oblivion” arose partly from material that didn’t feel at home on the previous record. Due to the ongoing pandemic and lack of distractions (i.e. tours), the band devoted their time and effort to finishing the record straight out. Here comes “Kingdom of Oblivion“.
Review
“Kingdom of Oblivion” is 70 minutes of pure amazing psychedelic and prog madness. The nice mix of the fast-paced rock’n’roll and slow songs give the album a nice depth. This is definitely not your standard psych rock album but offers so much more including progressive elements and slow ballad-like songs, making it a colorful one!
A nice twist we get to experience with “The Watcher” and “Dreamkiller“. While the beginning of the record is the relatively fast-paced fuzzy psych rock, the pace slows down just a bit with “The Watcher” and it’s time to chill. It almost feels like we are preparing to go on that huge and adventurous ride. In addition, “The Watcher“ being an instrumental track opens doors to so many emotions and thoughts!
Just when you think that it can’t get any better, here comes “The Transmutation of Cosmoctopus Lurker”. This is the longest and the most progressive track of the album, lasting for almost 11 minutes and summarizes the essence of this record so well! You get the hard rock elements, the twists and turns and all those psychedelia and even ‘jazz’ within one song! This is Motorpsycho at their finest and with this record, they show this once again
“Kingdom of Oblivion” is the roller coaster ride, opening up many dimensions and colors. I imagined myself listening to these guys live and I hope that we get to experience this record live someday, what a musical feast! Get it and go on that trip!
