17-11-2010 Eastpak Antidote Tour

Venue: Substage, Karlsruhe (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

The Eastpak Antidote tour is back. 4 bands are rocking throughout Europe again. This year it’s Veara, The Riverboat Gamblers, The Black Pacific and Sum 41. Tonight’s show in Karlsruhe was sold out.

The first band tonight was Veara. Formed in the halls of a Augusta, GA high school in 2003, vocalist Brad Wyrosdick, guitarist Patrick Bambrick, bassist Bryan Kerr and drummer Brittany Harrell, have since released a self distributed EP and full-length and have toured with bands The Maine, DangerRadio and Powerspace. In 2009 the band partnered up with Jeremy McKinnon and Joshua Woodard of pop-punk powerhouse A Day To Remember, who were looking for bands to work with on their newly formed company Running Man Records, and the rest is history. They seemed quite young but they surely kicked ass. With a female drummer they rocked the Substage. Veara got the audience pretty wild. The guys on stage jumped around like they’d be in gym class. For the last song the singer went down to the pit to sing for the audience. Veara is an awesomely energetic band from Georgia and you could tell they were enjoying their first time in Europe.

Up next was another awesome band called The Riverboat Gamblers. The Gamblers are at the helm. Mike taps the fuel gauge. The light next to the little gas pump icon is shining brightly. The needle points directly to the words etched on the dash, “Point of no return.” They can take her down safely now or risk a crash landing. Everyone shakes their head. Mike makes an “another trip around?” circular gesture with his index finger above his head. Everyone smiles, knowing the danger of their answer. The Riverboat Gamblers were another extremely energetic band rocking their minds out on stage tonight and rocking the audience. Everybody seemed to have a great time, jumped and clapped along, shouted and did everything the band asked the audience to do. Jumping around, climbing around, jumping up and down the pit, the singer went close to the audience and got them even wilder. You simply couldn’t stand still and had to move along to the music.
Next band was The Black Pacific. When Pennywise vocalist Jim Lindberg left the band last year after 20 years, nine studio albums, millions of records sold and countless sold- out tours, many people in the music world assumed that would be the last they had heard of Lindberg for a while. They were wrong. Almost immediately after leaving the band, Lindberg-who also wrote much of the music for Pennywise-recruited drummer Alan Vega and teamed up with Far guitarist and producer Shaun Lopez (Deftones, Giant Drag) to flush out a batch of songs that see Lindberg moving in a more sonically varied and experimental direction without abandoning any of the aggression and energy of his previous act. The Black Pacific continued rocking. The singer talked a lot to the audience, so did the rest of the band. Everyone in the club was like a family. Jim even took some pictures of the audience with a photographer’s camera. It was an awesome performance by The Black Pacific, punk rock at its finest.

Last band of the night was Sum 41. When it came time for Sum 41 to start work on their fourth Island album, singer/songwriter/ guitarist Deryck Whibley wasn’t even sure there was a band after the exit of original member, guitarist Dave Brownsound, and the split with their old management company. With Sum 41 on stage even the last person went wild. Sum 41 played all their hits and everyone sang along. They played for about an hour.
