The Brazilian “thunder metal” trio Guardian of Lightning was founded in 2017 and after three years of rehearsals the debut album Cosmos Tree is out now.
If you have no idea what thunder metal is, let’s figure out. Into has no claims, it could be relaxing mantra or classic rock likewise. Observing the whole record, the answers to this phenomenon are clear and obvious. The album has something intangible; melody is fragmented and rhythm is irregular with unexpected emphases. At the same time, there is a hypnotic combination of notes like the whole universe rings and resounds. Aligned with the Stars begins from the chaos and creates order in it. Embracing dissonance in Sound of Thunder replaces tempo from one genre to another: from psychedelic vibes to Motorhead bass line and even further. The musicians’ experimental techniques add to Cosmos Tree harmonious and peaceful motifs. Another Place is characterized by the combination of horse-racing riffs and percussion. After all, this type of metal could stand between grunge, psychedelic and classic one.
The press kit warned that album consists “eight thundering metal tracks unlike anything ever heard by mortal ears before”. Actually, those ears have heard all of it here and there, but the result is pleased in the end.
