19-05-2008 Bloodlights

Supports: Gaslicker; Venue: Cafe Central, Weinheim (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

Here we go again. This seems to be my Norwegian months. After seeing PostScriptum live I now saw Bloodlights again, and I will be in Oslo…

Anyways, as I said, I went to a Bloodlights show in Weinheim/Germany at Café Central. The stage can be found on the upper floor. That is also where the dance floor is located at for parties. It is a little room with the stage, a bar and a sitting area with couches, tables and chairs. The venue was filling up slowly and for a moment I was afraid there would only be about 20 visitors, but more came right to the time when Bloodlights began, so it was quite full in the end.

As opening act they had Gaslicker, a German band from Worms. They performed for about half an hour, the audience stayed far away from the stage, and there was a huge gap between them and the band. Gaslicker played rock music and tried everything to get the audience move along a little bit more, the singer was talking quite a lot but nobody seemed to care. The light was terrible so it was really hard to take pictures, but the sound was good. Gaslicker had a few fans in the audience who sang along, clapped and cheered, the rest stayed rather unimpressed. There was no real connection between the band and the audience, no interaction. The talking of the singer could not change that. They were good, just something was missing. Maybe it was the passion to music that you couldn’t really feel and it seemed like they just have to play there, but I am not sure.

Up next were Bloodlights. Now the venue was full and there was no gap between audience and band left anymore. Bloodlights is a band from Oslo/Norway. The singer is the ex-guitar player of Gluecifer and founded the band in 2006. Bloodlights are four nice guys that know how to rock the stage and love playing music. You just move along to their music without even realizing it and you feel home with them on stage. It was a very familiar feeling in Weinheim as they began, even though I didn’t know anybody in the audience. The show seemed to rush by, Bloodlights played almost all songs off the album plus “New Rose” by The Damned and “Silly Thing”. The audience was not cheering too much, but they clapped, danced and sang along which was fine enough. The light didn’t get much better, there was still a lot of red light there, but I didn’t care. The performance was so great and captivating that we all forgot everything around this show. At a couple songs Captain Poon (singer and guitar) and Howie B (guitar) were both jumping on boxes and played from there. The fan behind Captain Poon was slightly cooling off the now very warm venue. The guys went through the set quite quick but we got our encore of two songs. Bloodlights is a really great live band and I recommend them to every one of you!
