Elfika, Paris based symphonic/progressive metal band releases their first album Secretum Secretorum. The album portraits a good female vocal power and a pretty solid orchestration in general. If you are a fan of classic heavy metal, there is something for you as well, as you will find themes of fantasy, nature, and history. They are clearly aiming for the epic as other bands with similar characteristics as Nightwish, or Within Temptation.
I’m a sucker for intros that aim to impress, so Chamber of secrets together with So Human do it fine, with tracks powered by shredding guitars and interesting scales. Plus, the effort made by the drums is remarkable as well.
Angel starts with a proper guitar solo and there is a bass work that is remarkable. There’s a bit for everyone here and be ready for a huge glorious ride in Other, which is a very enjoyable song, pulling 8 minutes of duration in a very cool way since it combines various vocal arrangements providing a choir effect. It is most likely my favorite track of the album. Dark Virgin is an epic story with some bits of Schubert’s Avé Maria, having the feeling of a medieval poem, and because of that, it’s the longest track of the album, almost 13 minutes. The remaining tracks fit well with all album but there is nothing too remarkable.
To sum up, the Elfika album is solid, with an interesting vocal interpretation and instrumental quality, not forgetting power. The songs combine well with each other and there won’t be boring moments. I guess I would like to see them in concert, as long as we do it in a castle, or even better, a monastery. That would suit well.
