Psychedelic folk rockers Hexvessel are back after one year of silence. They have returned to Svart Records and the 5th album, “Kindred”, is out this month.
“Kindred” takes us back to the roots, to nature at the heart of where the band’s essence lies. A total of ten tracks delivers us the perfect dark folk and progressive sound, organic yet complex. As always, the music comes from the heart and is highly spiritual, the lyrics deep and meaningful. Indeed, from the first listen, you will understand that this is not an album you will grasp quickly but it will grow and get better with each listen. With a fine production and excellent musical arrangements, the band depicts the spirit of “Kindred” so well.
Musically, we see Hexvessel taking their sound to a higher level with this release. One difference compared to the previous releases is the ‘calmness’ of this record. It is not as dynamic as the previous ones but the band rather focuses more on the acoustic and even romantic side with songs like Kindred Moon or Joy of Sacrifice. Some other nice twists I liked were the jazz-y elements in Billion Year Old Being or Phaedra as well as the eastern elements in Sic Luceat Lux, adding a nice dimension to the rich sound the band offers.
At this point, it would be unfair not to mention one big highlight, Fire of the Mind. The fanbase already knows how much of an influence Coil has on Hexvessel so this cover is extra special and emotional. We also had the great opportunity to listen to this song live back when the band played in Hamburg so I am pretty much looking forward to hearing this song live again when the opportunity comes!
“Kindred” marks a milestone in the band’s career, and it is definitely in my list of the best of this rather interesting year! I highly recommend this one to the ones who want to re-connect with themselves and with the nature. Get “Kindred” and devour the beauty and magic of the music.
