Interview with: Fear of Domination
By: Sabine van Gameren
The evening is here, Metalorgy is about to start in Nosturi, Helsinki (Finland). Fear of Domination is playing tonight, knowing that they have placed several studio diary video’s on their Youtube channel we found it time to catch up with the band about their new album.
The fame of this band have been growing a lot with during the past years. After interviewing them two years ago at the first edition of MetalOrgy many things have been going on. The band played at the after party of the Tuska festival, released their debut album, supported the Swedish Deathstars on their Finnish tour and year after year we see more people shouting for them here.
The band self is very enthusiastic about what the new album will bring. Niina Telén, playing keys in this band as well as providing backing vocals, tells that it is most likely that the album will release in early spring 2011. The album has not gotten a name yet, when asked Johannes (guitar) says: “Topsecret”. Obviously, everyone jokingly agreed on that being THE name. After seeing the shows, Tempelores crew and some others set the bet for it, but time will learn.
Vocalist Saku Solin is telling a bit more about the differences between their debut album and the new one. “The album is more complete, the songs really back up each other more” he says and continues with a bit of nostalgia about ‘Call of Schizophrenia’: “ ‘Call of Schizophrenia’ was our debut., it had old and new songs. Still a pretty good album, but it had its own… problems. But on the new album, I can’t hear anything like that.” Sounds we can expect more mature material as the band feels they have grown a lot. Yet, there is a little surprise perhaps for some of the fans as Niina tells that there will also be Finnish songs on their upcoming release. But besides this, they have also become more technical. “I think more technical would be an appropriate term for our new songs” says Johannes. This technical includes the band’s new drummer. His name is Vesa Ahlroth and he was drum technician before. “I know them since 2007 when they did their first studio demo. It was.. Perfect World. I found it so amazing that I wanted to work with them”, he comments. The whole band seems to be happy that he joined the band and according to Saku it was not that hard to convince him for that: “He is insane like the others”. |
As announced as well on their official website, the band repeats that he is responsible for a different touch to the music. “He is very fast on the drums” Saku comments on him and continues: “Even if it just a basic drumbeat, he can make it sound like something more”. Everyone seemed very content with him and he added a modest “You just have to add that little groove” to it. Tonight will not be the first concert of Vesa with the band. He has been substitute before and since he joined officially played a couple of gigs too. Though he comes with an interesting statement about this sold out evening in Nosturi where when the doors opened there were only 10 tickets left for the people that didn’t got their ticket in advance. “I am losing my Nosturi virginity. It’s like getting laid for the first time” he tells. For those who aren’t familiar with the venue, it has an official capacity of 900 and houses a large stage, the HIM Heartagram on the roof and also gives house to many rehearsal spaces. “It gets even better when you are on it… you know.. the stage” he continues and we close the interview off, as the doors are now open “I have been playing for thirteen years and I have been waiting for something like this. It all pays off in this very specific night”. And the rest is history. |
