23-10-2010 MetalOrgy

Venue: Nosturi, Helsinki (Finland)
By: Sabine van Gameren

The third edition of Metalorgy has taken place. This year the doors opened with hardly any tickets left, meaning a sold out evening for this festival in Nosturi, Helsinki.

The band D-Creation has the honor to open this evening. They have been around for some years, formerly known as Dawn Creation, but after some reforming in 2006 they went under their current name. Making Melodic Death Metal they created an instant atmospherical vibe in the venue which was quite filled already when they started. The presentation of the band is one that is most questionable. Vocalist Olli Vuorinen brings an image of Jesus with the way he dresses, slippers included, which is not really matching with what their music radiates. Furthermore the band seem to use the stage quite well, they were a decent opener, but perhaps a little different from what the rest of the bands will bring this evening and therefore a bit of a black sheep on this evening. The front row was filled with people who came for bands that played later on and the crowd just seem to watch it quietly without getting too warmed up.

Second band of this evening was Ruoska. The band makes Industrial Metal and their latest album called “Rabies” dates back to 2008. After that things have been quiet around them. The band did not play many gigs and Metalorgy has been their first gig since long time. Their set started with a statement pose of vocalist Patrik. Arms wide, welcoming the audience back into the world of Ruoska. Songs of different albums were played but most popular seem to be the songs of their latest release. “Pirunkieli” got welcomed with quite some cheering. What stands out most for this band is the strong personalities of each band members. They quite set themselves as characters and therefore people seem to take their words for granted. Of course the low vocals help with creating this atmosphere. It would be easily to set this band next in line to Rammstein as you might need a point of reference, but Ruoska seems more focused on the music rather than creating a whole circus around their show. Good to have seen them here at Metalorgy as the band speaks still about doing only sporadically gigs in near future.

Hard Dance dj Protheus was giving a performance as well and this one might have been a bit strange to be in the middle of the lineup today, after all the tendency to expect a quite static performance is there, but nothing seems to point any further into that direction. As soon as the curtains open and the beat is on there is action going on up there. Tonight there was a special performance given, the show was featured by ErilaZ to bring some extra in the set. The audience had to get used to it at first, as well as quite some people went down to smoke or get a drink, but eventually the set got off and some people were dancing. Good set, but perhaps more suitable at the end of the evening.

Fear of Domination have set themselves quite some name, playing at all Metalorgy’s so far, their debut album “Call of Schizophrenia”, a tour with Deathstars and a new album coming up. Before their show started, people were shouting their name and at the first song it was set that Fear of Domination would bring the most energy around tonight. Headbanging, moshpit, dancing… it was all there. The band got a new drummer and although he seemed quite hidden in a huge cloud of smoke he made himself fit in here perfectly. Those who are familiar with their debut album, have noticed that this band comes on quite more aggressive while being on stage, tonight at start a bit problematic to hear vocals, but soon on to a better balance. The band started to throw some money into the audience which got the show going stronger even more. While closing the set with the song “Fear of Domination” where people shouting their name again it was clear that we can expect quite some of what the band will bring next, as these confidential songs are still a hit, the newer material seems to shuffle in easily.

Closing the evening is Turmion Kätilöt. The band coming from Kuopio had quite a summer tour already with various festivals (for example: Tuska ), but had brought something special to the stage for tonight as well. Today would be one of the two official release parties of their new single “Ihmisixsixsix”. The band played a lot of the familiar songs, but took really long pauses in between the songs to talk to the audience, make their show as they wanted and catch some breathe. They tend to walk and jump around quite a lot. Last year, same stage we missed the fury, but that flame got certainly up again in here. The band played songs as “Verta ja Lihaa”, “U.S.C.H” and “Minä Määrään” and played a little more than one hour. Their new single came in the encore which made the crowd dance a lot and it shows that there are many people awaiting a new album release. A good closure of a night that brought the necessary dose of Industrial Metal for the month and yet another successful year of Metalorgy joined the history.
