Crimson Sun who are a melodic metal band from Finland has released their sophomore album “Fates” after their 2015 full-length debut “Towards The Light”.
The band had released a single called The Last Day On Earth before the release of the album which gave us the first taste of what was coming next. I, for one was excited to hear more. Fates has also such a cool album cover like its predecessor. It’s a bit creepy, too of course Crimson Sun being a metal band not a soda pop one after all, but it’s a cool creepiness. 🙂
The band touched many different subjects in their lyrics, from space travel (Distant Stars), the effects of social media addiction (Virtual Reality) and climate change (The Last Day on Earth) all the way to Cross-fit with the opener The Beast Within.
The first half of the album starting with the tunes like The Beast Within are embellished with prevalent uptempo synths that is akin to Amaranthe‘s style which I am not really fond of, but the second half of the album is more serious and not so dominated by the synth/keys sounds which was more to my liking. From the second half, my favorites ended up being Overcome, Distant Stars and The Last Day on Earth. With ballad-y Overcome, I finally caught the feeling of grandeur I was expecting from Crimson Sun. Distant Stars gives us a big catchy chorus which is an ear candy. And the strings on The Last Day on Earth takes us on a journey to the edge of the world looking down into an abyss, the strings melody actually remind me of the strings at the Evanescence‘s Tourniquet outro. However, the song itself does not have any similarities with that or any other song melodically. I very much liked the symphonic orchestral vibe of The Last Day on Earth. I have to say Sini Seppälä’s voice with all its strength and powerfullness is very discernible to me at this point amongst the myriad of female-fronted metal bands.
“Fates”, overall is a very good album and quite a catch for the melodic metal fans around the world. Good job to the guys after all these years!
