Black Lilium is a German band, formed in 2014. Their music is all about the mixture of melodic metal and progressive elements. Their debut release “Dead Man’s Diary” is out this month.
First thing that will catch your attention will be the wonderful and catchy melodies; the album might start off a bit ‘generic’ and might give you the feeling that you heard the tunes here and there but be patient as there is much more to it than your standard melodic metal. With each song, the album gets more progressive and thanks to the versatile and from-the-heart vocals by Felix, you will be able to feel the songs. That being said, the strength of this album is definitely the vocals; the album is not so technical or over-progressive but as long as you enjoy the melodic versatility in your music reflected through the clean vocals, you will fall in love with this album in an instant!
Apart from the progressive melodic approach, some electronic and even pop elements add a nice dimension to the band’s sound, so I can recommend the songs like “The Ones You Made Us” or “Walls Around My Soul” for the fans of catchy pop/electronic tunes. On the other hand, for the fans of the progressive side of this genre, “Dead Man’s Diary” is one big highlight. One thing that could have made the release even better would be the length of it; sometimes it’s great to keep things simple and short – in particular with the catchy tunes- so this is something the band can work on from the composition/songwriting perspective.
Modern, dynamic and versatile… “Dead Man’s Diary” is the perfect release for the ones craving for some fresh sound and ear-candy in their music. I also gotta add that this album brought me back to 10 years ago when this mixture of melodic metal and electronic elements was a huge deal. So kudos to these guys for the nostalgia! Especially recommended for the ones who are into the mix of electronic and metal genres.
