Supports: Dimmu Borgir; Venues: Rosensaal, Mannheim & Palladium, Cologne (Germany)

Off to Mannheim I was for this Saturday night. The beautiful venue Rosengarten was the place to be. Who played? Dimmu Borgir and Korn.
Rosensaal is a classic concert hall with a gallery for sitting and a main audience room
in front of the stage. The stage is quite big and also was full of equipment because there were three bands to play. The audience room was filling up quickly way before the bands started as well. It was one black mass, mostly the people were wearing band merchandise of Korn, Dimmu Borigr and other bands in that genre.
Unfortunately I missed the first band, but I remember them being from the UK and they seemed very nice.
So my concert day began with Dimmu Borgir. Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Oslo, Norway, formed in 1993. Dimmu Borgir means “dark cities” or “dark castles/fortresses” in Icelandic, Faroese and Old Norse. The name is derived from a volcanic formation in Iceland, Dimmuborgir. The band has been through numerous line-up changes over the years; guitarist Silenoz and vocalist Shagrath are the only founding members remaining. They came on stage with make up and masks looking dark and evil. The stage had some fitting decoration especially around the drums as well. The outfits were very interesting to look at. There was always something new you would discover on it. The first couple songs had a lot of orchestra in it, the later ones were more metal sounding just like we know it from Dimmu Borgir. Their show lasted for about 40 minutes. The audience enjoyed it big time but did not move around too much. Maybe it was because of the venue or maybe everybody was still tired from the previous days. The cheering was intense though and the audience even shouted for more. |
In between the bands DJ Kid Knuckels was entertaining the waiting audience.
Up next was Korn. For them the audience was going wild. Korn is an American nu metal band formed in Bakersfield, California, in 1993. The current band line up includes four members: Jonathan Davis, James “Munky” Shaffer, Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu, and Ray Luzier. The band was formed after the disbandment of L.A.P.D.. They have collaborated with other musical acts such as Chino from Deftones, Ice Cube, Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit, Tre Hardson from The Pharcyde, & Nas among others. Korn formed in 1993, the same year they released their first demo album, Neidermeyer’s Mind. The album featured the two ex-members of Korn, Brian “Head” Welch and David Silveria. Their debut album, Korn was released in 1994, where they featured the same musicians that had performed on Neidermeyer’s Mind. The band began recording “Life Is Peachy” in April 1996, and released it on October 15, 1996. “Follow the Leader” is recognized as Korn’s mainstream breakthrough. Korn played all their hits including half of a cover song by Pink Floyd. The singer did not talk much with the audience. Korn definitely rocked on stage and the audience rocked the floor offstage but there was not much interaction between the audience and the band.
The show in Cologne was not much different. I missed the first band again. The crowd action during Dimmu Borgir was a lot more than in Mannheim.
And Korn was a lot better than in Mannheim as well. The audience was going insane. There were several moshpits, circle pits, and several crowd surfers. In Cologne the singer talked a lot more with the audience and received a huge feedback. The audience . and I mean the entire audience – did everything the band asked them to. It was simply amazing. Cologne was probably the best Korn show many of us if not even all of us have ever seen.
