24-09-2010 Fiction Plane

Supports: The New Shining; Venue: Tivoli Oudegracht, Utrecht (Netherlands)
By: Sabine van Gameren

Two bands in Tivoli Oudegracht this evening. It’s close to being sold out and it seems that this evening will become a memorable one.

The New Shining was the support band this evening and a slight confusion was there in the crowd. As there is some band which had “New” between brackets in their name as well, people were not really sure if it were them, or another band. Easy enough, the band entered the stage and everyone agreed that this were the same three guys from Ridderkerk as they thought. A quite raw sounds comes from these guys, rock but not for pussies. Their songs stick together very well. They have rage, melodic elements, the sing-a-long part and the energy. The band released their debut album in 2008 and their single “Shadowcast” was played as well, many seem to recognize it. The New Shining is going strong and now they are supports, but how long till they headline this venue being sold out?

Today’s headliner is Fiction Plane though. Also a trio and the most read and said comment about them that their singer is the son of Sting. You could have figured that out as well when hearing him sing and his looks might hint in that direction as well, but let’s treat the band as Fiction Plane, for what they are. A quite hard sound comes from them with a huge domination bass, sound dude, may you please turn it down a bit? Vocals are disappearing. Eventually it got better, but it took quite a bit which made the first half of the set falling down. Nobody was leaving the building, so the second half of the set they could clearly make up for that. The fans welcomed their released singles with some extra cheering. It seems like the band got the hearts of the audience already and they can’t do much wrong anyway.
Some slight conversation comes up in between the songs and the band makes sure everyone knows they enjoy being in The Netherlands. They know how to make a show with not much more on the stage than just them and their music. Don’t expect a whole spectacle at their shows, but keep coming for the music. And this is what works for Fiction Plane perfectly, no need for more.
