Demetra Sine Die – Council From Kaos

Releasedate: 25-01-2008; Label: My Kingdom Music
By: Sabine van Gameren

In the year 2003, the Italian Demetra Sine Die started building on their road to world fame. The band makes dark alternative metal with typical doom elements in the back of the basis. “Coucil From Kaos” is their debut album.

Their music is quite instrumental, but when I heard the vocals in the songs, while playing the album the first time I was surprised. I was expecting a deep, dark voice. It turned out that the vocals of singer Marco Paddeu are quite light.
That is quite a refreshing element in the genre, but somehow it gives Marco a harder task to convince me with their music.
I have to admit that after listening to the album a few times, I am still mostly pleased by the instrumental part of this album. In total, the album contains 8 long songs (the longest last 9 minutes and 14 seconds) which are quite ok.

The band gets compared with A Perfect Circle, Anathema, Katatonia and Meshuggah. All nice names, but Demetra Sine Die is not there yet. The album is perfect for listening when working, and definitely one to keep, but comparing the band with names as mentioned seems one step too far to me. I missed some power, in the way that it gets your attention and demand you to listen to the music and the lyrics more carefully than just putting it in the background.
