Øyvind Torvund is an Noorse composer who worked together with Bit20 Ensemble to create a piece of world music. In 2019 they decided to release this music as “The Exotica Album”.

The album kicks off and right away you understand where that ‘Exotica’ is coming from. It is a bit out of the ordinary indeed. Mother nature seems to be an inspiration and this does not necessarily means that is the Norwegian nature coming forward. A lot of random sounds make that this piece is something you will need to have your attention with.

At one point it are birds flying around you and then it becomes a cheerful collection of sounds, here and there a bit more wilder parts that makes it exciting and then darkness can be a part of it too. Diversity is endless in this release and yet it comes together in a very organized way. Listen for example to “Rainforest Morning” and hear the mix of sounds being as cheerful as they can be eerie. If you have ever spend an actual early morning in the rainforest, which your writer has, you can relate to the piece very much. Sometimes you don’t know if the source of a sound is near or hundreds of meters away, but that is not something that should be in your mind. You have to surrender to the moment and let it all come to you. And that exact feeling comes forward in this track and basically the entire album.

A trip to the rainforest is not for everyone. Your trip may costs you a lot, but if that is not on your budget right now that you may consider getting this release. Close your eyes and let the music surround you. You certainly feel like you are there.
