Wolcensmen – Fire in the White Stone

Label: Indie Recordings
Releasedate: 20-09-2019

Following the success of the debut album ‘Songs from the Fyrgen‘, Wolcensmen is back with the highly anticipated sophomore full-length, ‘Fire in the White Stone’ consisting of 11 brand new dark folk hymns of a mythological nature. For this new record, the project’s mastermind, Dan Capp forged a story with his own vision and ideas, and wrote a short story to accompany the music. As a huge fan of the genre itself, I have been beyond excited to share my thoughts on this one.

“Fire in the White Stone” is the kind of album that will captivate you in an instant. There is such a magical atmosphere in the vocals and the many instruments, with the cello being my personal highlight. There is no rush but the perfect calm yet deep melodies for the listener to give in to and chill. The atmosphere and the color of the record comes with many shapes and layers; some songs will spark that colorful and joyful vibe whereas some will bring the cold autumn or winter breeze. In general, though, the album evolves around a dark and fantasy-like atmosphere. Personally, I envisioned the Scottish highlands or the landscape of New Zealand while listening to the record.

Spinning the album a few times, I can’t help but notice how well it is produced and composed from the beginning to the end. There is not one story but many stories, the perfect harmony of the instruments and vocals. The instruments are not thrown out there just for the sake of it but introduced to the songs in such a way that the listener will be taken aback by the mystical and magical vibe of the acoustic songs.

“Fire in the White Stone” has become one of my favs of this year in an instant. I always appreciate the acoustic albums with a vision and intense spirit. Recommended to anyone who is into dark folk in general!
