Norwegian Hardanger fiddler Anna Hytta teamed up with her ensemble Tokso to create a new release. They used an ancient Norse poem as inspiration for this release. It is available now.
Well, Anna certainly is not the first artist to use this poem as inspiration. Burzum’s Varg Vikernes comes up quickly, but acts like Wardruna had their go with it as well. It is one of those poems that touches the imagination.
This version has something clean, cleaner than what we heard from the before mentioned acts. Compositionwise the music somewhat reminded me to the work of Max Lilja. A logical connection considering the role of the cello in this piece. In the more hysteric parts on the release the whole may become a bit harder to love. You want it to break out more, but it reminds still a bit too much in line. A slight lack of excitement. But maybe that is just the listener being a bit impatient. Where the whole comes together is for example in the track “Grenjanði”. There the group has simply all of it together.
At the end of the release you feel like you have been listening to a happy story. How it ends, well maybe that can be an inspiration to take a look at the poem and have it at the side while listening. To get the full experience.
