The Doom/Death metal band Black Sun Aeon comes back with a second album. “Routa” is its name and it is all about the Finnish winter.
The album is split into two parts; Talviaamu (winter morning) and Talviyö (winter night). The first part of the album is putting the stress on how dark romantic a winter can be. Keyboardlines, a calm backing up by the drums the guitar comes in and drags you into a wonderful story to be vocalized by Mikko Heikkilä which is also known as the singer of Sinamore. It brings you into the atmosphere that goes deeper than their debut album “Darkness Walks Beside Me”, see it as the start of the winter, when the snow is still making you happy because it gives you the confidential feeling that mother nature is still going strong. On the second part, you notice the changeover to more depressive parts. Where you hate the darkness the snow and the cold and simply have enough of it, seeking forward to the spring which is yet so far away. The tone of the music gets more aggressive, guitars get a harder edge, vocal wise there is more aggression also. A little faster parts are introduced and in general the atmosphere got grim.
The two parts are certainly linked to each other. You should not listen to one and ignore the other because they bring together a complete story. You can romantize the Finnish winter, or hate it from the bottom of your heart but there is something of both in it and Black Sun Aeon perfectly translated this with “Routa”. They give you the whole package and you can create your own mix to match with your own feeling about it.
