My Friend Skeleton – Vanitas

Releasedate: 12-03-2010; Label: Danse Macabre (ALIVE)
By: Nina Mende

My Friend Skeleton released their debut double album now. An artistic package not only artwork wise. The special edition CD box is created by the artist himself, each of the 25 ones is unique. But even if you don’t have one of the special editions you should take a close look at it. The first CD includes dreamy melodies. The first few songs have hardly any lyrics, the others have lyrics, nicely sung to create a fairytale like atmosphere. Some songs have a sailor sound, some are more medieval but all have a lot of fantasy in it that inspires your imagination. “Funeral Of A Broken Doll” also includes male vocals. “Requiem” is a song in Latin. The album in general includes several languages. Besides English, German and Latin you can also find French on it.

The second CD doesn’t has much of the fairytale sound as the first one. The second is more electric. The intro has water dripping sounds, it sounds like in a cave. “Roboterblut” with all its parts has distorted vocals on it. Act 5 of it is softer though and has female vocals whereas the second album has more male vocals than the first one.

This album is a gorgeous piece of art, very interesting with a lot of creativity and inspiration.
