Opening this year’s Dynamo Metal Festis the Belgian formation Elephant. The band won a bandbattle and made their way to the stage. They seem to find a lot of inspiration from bands like Danko Jones. Thy are quite lucky as many people took the opportunity to arrive early and watch them play. Their performance was quite energetic, the music seem to drive them, but the stage is too small regardless the fact that the stage is actually quite large. Most standing outside their guitarist who more than once decides to take the lead and spit out these riffs like it ain’t nothing. One to watch, one to watch.

Each time I get to see Iron Reagon I like them a little more. The American crossover formation always rages on and on during their set and today was not any different. They did not need much time to further action started. Songs like “Eat Shit and Live” are straightforward and set you right to your expectations. The band excels in this, at the early hour people get along with it so well. Quite a moshpit and the first crowdsurfers appeared. Fast and faster are bringing them riffs while their vocalist demands that you get involved.

Perhaps the set was a bit short, we would have liked a little more of them, certainly a nice fit for a future edition of Dynamo Metal Fest.

Anneke is back. Sons of Apollo was scheduled but due to circumstances they had to cancel their show. But is ready to pick it up for them and they did with flair. Some fire elements, fireworks, of course expected neither that name but nevertheless a good add to their show.

As opposed to last time the album has been out now and people know the songs. Some sing along, some cheering from a distance but the majority of the audience seem to out up with them regardless the missing of sons of Apollo. Sure, let’s not deny that there are people who are quite displeased with the fact that Anneke is there instead of Sons of Apollo, but last minute it is not like you can get everyone to go and having Vuur available is pleasing as much as it doesn’t.

Some old school metal is something that is simply a must at Dynamo. I Am Morbid was going to give us just that. And from song one one we saw a cloud of dust arise in front of the stage. Hundreds of metal heads going wild is causing it’s but sure with these guys we didn’t expect any different. The enthusiasm of the band is contagious also, they seemed pleased to be here and also they response of their set. Maybe a bit later on the day would have been better though.

Leprous was playing and our readers may remember we saw them at Tuska earlier this year. We wrote there about that love triangle that was almost broken, but simply got restored right there at the spot. We were a bit anxious on how all would work out at Dynamo.

They have a calm set, not the band you go crowdsurfing at, how would the Dynamo audience respond to it? Well not too bad actually. The first song was really a bit too slow it seemed, taking too long to get to the point, but after that people observed with care. The progress were a bit in bad luck with some sound issues before they started also and so they had to cut it short, but when they were done, a warmhearted and well deserved applause came upon them.

Annihilator brought some severe contrast. With their groovy non bullshit attitude they were ready to heat it up again. You better had prepared as the guys let no time go to waste. “king of the Hill” is right there at song two and everyone is shouting along, moshing or headbanging. What an energy comes from these guys!

Also, charismatic frontman even appeals to some of the Ghost fans upfront and get them enthusiastic too. They have been there since doors open and we haven’t seen them enjoying a band as much as them before. Despite the guys have been around for long they still manage to convince new metal heads as it seems. Only a couple months ago the guys released their album “For The Demented” which is number 16 from them at which one guy commented: OMG 16! That will last me for years. Says it all we would say.

Overkill is there and it is one of those bands that delivers a good dose of thrash every time you get to see them. We can’t recall ever been disappointed by these guy. Talking to the audience quite a bit they bond easily but with these killer riffs they have people eating out of their hands.

The guys give you a trip through time, playing a diverse setlist that will please many. “Rotten To The Core” and “Electric Rattlesnake” are welcomed with cheering when they are announced. At the end of the set the band played three covers, which each of them made us smile. Nice!

Ministry is perhaps a bit controversial but daring is one way to get people’s attention. On the side of the stage two inflatable Trump chickens including a forbidden for Nazi’s sign are placed. Yes, if you had not seen them before you are in for a treat.

Ministry is a band that has something’s to to say and without that you miss the essence. Last March a new release from their hands saw light. “Amerikkkant” it s called and it’s a record that one can draw a lot from. Political, yes obviously and combined with industrial that makes for a heavy show. A lot of people seem to have come for these guys so it was an instant success. The guys are throwing their music over you, you just have to listen to it. One band that could easily have headlined here.

But. Ghost was The actual headliner. Probably the band most has been spoken off. The drama, the recent change of style in “Prequelle” is something people debate about. The die hard fans upfront seem to hear, speak and see no evil, but further down the field there is more a “let s see” attitude. From “I don’t like disco Ghost” to “it’s actually catchy”. The opinions are diverse.

No matter what you think of all it you can not deny that the band puts down a show worthy of a headliner. Confetti, flames and all the gimmicks are there and the music is played with precision. And so the band closes the festival in style. Sure, the discussion of this show will live on, but as a closing band they know perfectly well how to entertain.

Then the festival is over and although we have not seen a name for next year, we are already looking forward to it.
