Bloodlights – Simple Pleasures

Releasedate: 26-02-2010; Label: Silversonic (H’art)
By: Nina Mende

Bloodlights is a hard rock/melodic rock 4-piece hailing from Oslo, Norway, formed by Captain Poon, ex. Gluecifer. Guitarist Captain Poon formed Bloodlights in 2006, after his hard rock outfit Gluecifer broke up in 2005. The name comes from the phenomenon of seeing red flashes right before passing out after consuming too much “of everything”. After some time writing songs, Captain Poon stepped into the role as both guitar player and vocalist, taking a more melodic approach. After some rehearsals with drummer Jonas Thire of Amulet, bassist Ron Elly joined. Guitarist Howie B joined in march the same year, and the band spent most of their time recording demos and rehearsing. Early 2007, the band recorded their debut album in Berlin with producer Phil Caivano from Monster Magnet. In May 2007, drummer Jonas Thire was replaced by Nico Von Schäfer. The self-titled album was released on German label Mate In Germany in November 2007 and now their follow-up “Simple Pleasures” is being released.

It’s been a while since the last album, but finally the wait is over. With excitement I put the CD into my player, curious what the new stuff would sound like. And I would not get disappointed. Fast and thriving the music comes blasting from the speakers, ready to kick some ass. The sound is bigger than it was on the last album. More “shout along” choruses and more outstanding guitar riffs are also to be found on this album. “Simple Pleasures” is a little bit slower, but still catchy. Easy going you are floating through the album. “Simple Pleasures” seems to be over in no time but keeps on echoing in your mind long after the CD player had stopped running. Like an addict on withdrawals your finger automatically goes direction replay button. On this album you can also find the typical “anthem songs” for everybody to sing along, slow songs, faster songs and all of them are meant for you to be rocking along. The booklet and album layout is held very dark. Unfortunately you can’t find the lyrics in the booklet (but the lyrics are not that hard to memorize and you won’t stop listening to the album before knowing all the songs by heart anyways). But there are some really nice pictures of the band in the booklet. The four Norwegians made it again: another great album full of catchy songs ready to hit the road and venues, get the audience wild at festivals and have a good time.
