Venue: Gloria Helsinki (Finland)
By: Sabine van Gameren
There are many ways to end the year in Helsinki. We chose to go to Gloria.
Eve of Destruction was there and brought us some heavy music to celebrate the end of 2007.
Barbe-Q Barbies were first. As the band name might already brought you to the idea:The band exists out of chicks only. They bring us some pop/rock music.
Little punky, but not too much. The venue was not yet filled, which was probably because they were first. Seeing Barbe-Q Barbies is nice. They play typical feel good music, nice to hear and on stage they move around a little. During their performance they had some problems with the drums, but in between two songs it got fixed while the rest of the barbies were talking to the audience. Nice starter of the evening.
Tuho was up next. This band really made an impression on me. I would say, most of all bands on the evening. They play thrash/death metal since 2003. I really enjoyed the way they brought the humor in their lyrics. Songs like “Dead Metal Massacre” and “Violence”, which was the encore, are songs which really stood out between the rest, although I enjoyed the whole show.During “Violence” the guitarist Tuomio does some vocals as well and I really adored that song. Unfortunately it is not a long song, so they were done way too fast for me. Hopefully, I will run into them again some day.
A band from the wonderful town Hämeenlinna: The Zombi. For the ones who know who Cannibal Corpse is, I can say The Zombi is a horrible copy of them!
Death Metal which is clearly influenced by this band. You can hear Cannibal Corpse in every instrument, every song they play. Unfortunately, Cannibal Corpse is a settled name in their genre and a band which knows how to create great music, The Zombi actually misses these things. Instrumentally it just doesn’t work! I got very annoyed by the way they tried to be alike and totally failed.
This went on till the level arrived that I wanted to leave the venue, but for the sake of this review I stayed. My fun of seeing a great show with Tuho was completely spoiled by this band. Thanks for that!
Text band 2 After the disaster of The Zombi, I would hopefully be pleased by Discard. The band more or less cheered me up again. Musically way better than band before them! They know exactly how to integrate their issues and emotions in their music and bring it to their audience on such a way that you really believe in it. I have to give credits to guitarist Janne Roiha. He shows off his skills and I liked to see what kind of tricks he can do on his guitar. Discard as total is a nice band. Definitely a band I would see again if I could. Text band 2
Last band I saw was Ajattara. A black metal band from Helsinki which already got quite some fame. No wonder to see many people showing up just for them. It took them almost an hour to get the stage done for them, while instruments as synthesizers were already on. I was expecting quite some class from them.
When the gig started, hell was broken. People threw their glasses on the floor and started a mosh fight. I would not call it a mosh pit, it was based around a fight of drunken guys who were fighting earlier that night on the balcony as well. At least everyone was enjoying the music and that made the evening nice. For me, I got a little bored halfway their set. The lyrics are in Finnish and I understand too less Finnish to hear immediately what it is about, while it actually seems to be an important element in their music. But on the way they play and perform their show, you just know this band is able to become very big! I am sure we will hear more about them.
