29-12-2007 Rokkers Ball

Location: Ravintola Wäiski (Finland)
By: Sabine van Gameren

In the east side of Helsinki, there is a restaurant boat which has a little
stage. It is called Ravintola Wäiski. This evening there were four bands
  playing on the “Rokkers Ball”.

First band of the evening was Pro Widow. There is not much about Pro Widow, according to the MySpace they just got started. They make some rock music what sounds mostly like garage/grunge. An active stage act entertains us during the set however it seems to be that not that many people are in Wäiski yet.

Lines of Leaving is next. I saw the band a while before in their hometown Tampere and I think I liked them this time way more than the first confrontation. On the small stage the band seems to fit more or maybe it was that more people show up which improved the atmosphere. There seems to be some more activity on the stage. Lines of Leaving makes alternative rock, with the System of a Down idea of making songs. Their album “Battle of Humanity” just came out so they played songs from this album mostly. The songs they make have statements and you have to listen to the band to find these statements yourself.

The Jade is entering the stage after Lines of Leaving and at this point there were quite some people out there in Wäiski. They are from Helsinki and it seems to be that there were people out there to see them. I even saw people with an Italian flag, which were probably one of their more than 16,000 MySpace friends. There was quite some action onstage and in front of the stage as well, because singer Wille Rosen often stepped in front of the stage to get closer to the fans. If I counted correctly, they played 12 songs including my favourite song “When Heaven Calls”. A gig of The Jade can be synonym to: active, melodic, entertaining and roses. At the end of the gig, Wille had a short struggle with a drunk guy who tried to take over the microphone. A lovely show out there where people were dancing along and enjoying themselves.

Last band was Tampere based Parasite City. That this band is getting quite some fame is clear. They have many gigs planned till April 2008. In January their single “Burn” will come out and probably their fame will be growing even more. The band is already rocking since 2001 and if you live in Tampere, just as I did the past months, there is no chance that you have not seen them yet. It is quite hard to avoid them if you are actively visiting concerts.
Not that you should, because the band plays great live shows and they are widely appreciated for that. Just as they were tonight. The singer walks of the stage, takes a chair and dances with it. Then sits down for a while and gets on with   the show. Enough to see and enough to hear. Just another nice gig from this band. It will probably not the last time I will run into them, so you can expect some more of them soon.
