Volker comes from France. The band offers a blend of dark rock and sludge combined with a horror theme. Their album called “Dead Doll” is out now.
Frontwoman Jen Nyx comes in right away fromt he start, you know right away that is that lady keeping her guys in line. With a bit of a Skew Siskin touch she puts her mark on the music with a bit raw voice, maybe here and there a bit pulled to an extreme, a caraciture even, which you may have to get used to. Some streamlining in it could be done to give it a more commercial edge as the cleaner parts are giving that great contrast with the rawer side, but they seem to embrace the chaotic rather.
The music also includes some interesting riffs, which are sometimes falling a bit too far behind in the mix, a pity for they deserve some more spotlight too. The power behind the whole sound of the band is interesting enough though. There is lots of energy in it and the album is reallu diverse. Not one song sounds like one they played before and yet it is became an album with a connection in the songs, the balance is well thought off.
Altogether, “Dead Doll”is an interesting release. Some finetuning to the details may bring a next one to high levels, but we certainly get enthusiastic about this.
