Whiplash – Unborn Again

Releasedate: 27-10-2009; Label: Pulverised Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Whiplash is a band that goes around for quite some years. They formed in 1984 and brought six full length albums and one best of album to light before their latest release “Unborn Again” came to the world.

Thrasher with a history, the band have been presented in various ways with different musicians. For “Unborn Again” it is the trio Tony Portaro(Vocals, Guitars), Rich Day(Bass, Vocals) and Joe Cangelosi (Drums, vocals). Fans of the older work might buy the album without hesitating and they should because the band surely stayed true to what they have done in the past. The trio brings a steady thrash sound which has a good production over it. This shows that the band is not stuck in the past where slobby producing made the music filthy. An interesting detail about the album is the artwork that is tantalizingly close to satire and has references to the previous releases. Remember that wheelchair man from “Insult to Injury”? You’ll find him on this cover as well. Also the skeleton of “Ticket to Mayhem” is there as well as the guy of “Power and Pain”. The band seem to make a statement which tells you that Whiplash is still there as if they haven’t left. The album is not the newest and most original by that, but we have got were many Thrash fans have been waiting for: A quality return of this band.
