07-11-2009 The Virgins

Supports: So So Glos; Venue: Schlachthof, Wiesbaden (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

Tonight we spent at the little club of Schlachthof in Wiesbaden. (Schlachthof is separated into two venues, a big one and a little one… We were at the little one.) Many people were already waiting outside in the cold, ready to go on. Inside it was getting crowded fast. The audience seemed to have an anti-style weekend, they were wearing trendy clothes but not matching at all… anyway, tonight was about the band not the audience’s looks.

There were two bands to play tonight. The first one was The So So Glos from NYC. Their music was very funky and danceable, rocking with their guitars and bass. The guys gave everything to animate the audience to dance and swing along. Most people did. The cheering was getting louder throughout the show and people began to enjoy it more and more. The singer talked quite a lot with the audience. The guitar player had his guitar hanging extremely high it was almost right in his face but he could play very well that way. The So So Glos performed for about 30 to 40 minutes, way too short, but oh well.

Up next was The Virgins. The Virgins are an American band formed in 2006 in New York City consisting of Donald Cumming (vocals, guitar), Wade Oates (guitar), and Nick Zarin-Ackerman (bass). Their music was just as funky, not to say funkier than their opening act’s. Somehow the singer reminded me of Mick Jagger look-wise and of Ian Curtis (Joy Division) by the way he moved and performed. Their show was very catchy and thriving. Everybody moved along a lot, to their hit singles, the audience even sang along very loud. The singer talked quite a lot with the audience. After their show they came back for an encore of three songs. The Virgins put up a very entertaining show, everyone enjoyed it and so did the band.
