Defiance – The Prophecy

Releasedate: 19-10-2009; Label: Candlelight Records
By: Lara Cappelli

Defiance is a Trash Metal band from California formed in 1985. They disbanded in 1994 but announced their reunion in 2005 and now they’re back with their forthcoming album “The Prophecy”.

Eleven heavy tracks, this is what I had in my mind after the first listening of the album, nothing more and nothing less. Then I listened to it all over again for quite some times but my judgement remained the same. There isn’t a certain characteristic that got stuck in my mind and makes me feel the need of having one more listening now. Basically the album can be put into Heavy Metal, the vocals are very static and don’t change that much in the songs. One good thing are solos, which are doubtless well written and performed, they change a bit the songs which seem to follow pretty much the same structure. The first part of the album is a bit repetitive, then with the “The War Inside” it gets a bit better until you reach the highlight, “Eschaton” followed by “Sloth” which is maybe the song with the best melody of the album. After that, it all goes down once again.

I don’t feel up to saying “The Prophecy” is a bad album, it is good but simply not stunning, not a breath of fresh air but neither an album to throw away, just something in between.
