We were back at Brainstorm festival after last year was good for us and this year there were two days of the festival.
The German formation I Am The Deceiver is the first one to hit the stage tonight. They make Metalcore and have released an EP so far. They are interesting to have at first as they are quite an active band. They are jumping around, having some choreographed movements and bring stereotypical metalcore. Yes, that it is. What we hoped for is a bit of an own face but the band is clearly still searching for it. Yet, they are young and able to take their time to put some more identity to it when working on a new release perhaps. The energy is right at least.
Morgarten is next. The band is a remarkable one, having their looks drawing the attention of the audience at first and then draw them in further with the music they make. Folk that is. With a little Black Metal edge to it. And that seem to work surprisingly well.
They start comes from a flute, which does not play much of a role during the rest of the set, where the guys are choosing for some more power. The band is operating as a proper team in which of the musicians gets their time to shine in the spotlights, but here and there they could benefit from thinking this over and let the music lead it a little more as the results could be a tighter, more powerful song that sticks in your head longer. That being said, the band entertained well tonight, one that knows how to make a party.
The locals of Startled are anxious to hit the stage. They are stepping up when another band could not make it and they have played the festival before. With their Metalcore being known to the audience we did expect a larger part of the audience to have a look at what was going on, but it was a bit quiet in front of the stage.
They seem to have a good idea of what they want to bring, but for them counts the same as we saw at I Am The Deceiver, they lack a bit of an own identity. They do not really set themselves apart from the big group of bands playing this music and that is something they need to work on. The last couple of songs of their set we had to miss as well, so perhaps they killed it in there.
The Finnish band Cat O’Nine Tails is bringing their own crew to the venue. Pirate crew that is. A man with a parrot and some good looking parrots showed up to show support for these guys. Pirate Metal is not an entirely new concept, with a cts like Swashbuckle and Alestorm sailing all over Europe and beyond to spread that concept it is clear that people have not got enough of it.
Looking at these Finns they have chosen a more technical approach of it. Themed but not just for the sake of drunken party. The band released their album “Under Captain’s Flag” which gives them plenty of ammo to spend some time with their (upcoming) crew at this venue. The band is strongest when they are giving most power, the intensity brings many people into the show and makes it come alive. A performance that entertained many.
The last band of the evening was the Power Metal formation Signum Regnis from Slovakia. They had a bit of a bad start where they seem to be off with each other on multiple occasions and therefore seem to have trouble to keep their audience at their show. The songs they play are not coming out at the best as it seems. Besides that, the band seems eager to be here and gives a powerful presence. Further on their set they seem to get back together and from there on the are more enjoyable to watch. The guys have recently released the album “CHAPTER IV: The Reckoning” of which they play some songs. The band closes the evening well and let us look forward to what is to come at day two.
